Professional Clothes Basics

Professional Clothes Basics

Okay, so after all this chatting about tax returns, it's become clear to me that there is at least one thing other than saving and paying down debt that I NEED to do with mine -- I need to buy some professional clothes. I got my first real professional Legal job in September at 22ish weeks pregnant. Since I was already roughly the size of a small island nation and wearing maternity clothes I got kind of a pass on dressing as was appropriate for my position because when you're enormous pretty much nothing looks professional. But that obviously isn't going to work when I come back from maternity leave and it's becoming fairly evident that NOT having a professional image is going to be a stumbling block at review time, even though my work is excellent. In theory I can wear pretty much anything to work. In reality I need to be on the formal end of career casual - Not suits all the time, but not khakis and a shirt either. What I'm thinking about is developing a group of very classic basic pieces that all coordinate with one another and from which I can pull enough outfits to get through a week. I want these clothes to be simple, in neutral colors, and made out of fabrics that will last a long dang time and hopefully doesn't rely on dry cleaning. I have absolutely no problem putting some money into this project, since my professional success depends on it, but I don't want to spend more than I have to and I don't want to spend recklessly. I need shoes, slacks, skirts, blouses and jackets as well as accessories -- in fact, we can pretty much assume that if it isn't undies, I need it. So. If you were me, what would you buy and where would you shop for it?
