Pruning and Insecticides … And a bunch of other questions.
Hi everyone I've had interesting results with my first gardening attempt this year... 1. I learned I had too much Nitrogen in my soil, which has caused my plants to grow gigantic but not produce that many blooms 2. I learned that I have to use some sort of insecticide because they eat everything... any suggestions. I intended my garden to be a butterfly garden, so I was scared to put insecticides in. How do people do this so certain insects (butterflies) don't get harmed. 3. I learned that Scarlet Bee Balm molds no matter what I do to prevent it. 4. I learned that I should have planted the stuff deeper than suggested for more support... do you guys agree? So my main questions is this: 1. Next spring should I rake up all the mulch and put down a 4-5in layer of potting soil throughout my garden? 2. Should I use insecticides and what kind, how often? 3. Is there an insecticide I put down this Fall to kill off insect eggs? 4. What should I do to minimize the height of the plants but maximize the blooms? 5. When should I prune the garden? How far down do I prune? -- I have a ton of herbs that I would assume I can cut completely down because it will grow back. Thanks so much It seems so many of my questions I can't even get answered at the Garden Supply Shop or online on sites. You guys are definitely the experts! :)
