Pruning Lavender and Honeysuckle
The days are getting longer and warmer here in the northwest and the urge for gardening is setting in. Hi, my name is Sue, and I have been lurking for sometime but now I need some advice. I have a large honeysuckle plant against my house in the backyard that has a lot of deadwood in it and really needs a lot of pruning. I would like to start this plant all over again and was wondering if I can cut it all off, and if so, how much should I leave sticking out from the dirt? I also have about 3 lavender plants that have grown to about 5 ft in diameter and are crowding some other plants of mine. Can these plants take a hard cutting back? Is it okay to do this in the spring, or should this have been done in the fall? I have also started a large flower garden where the back parts of it is mostly in the shade due to the apple trees in there. Any suggestions for some shade loving, preferably perennials, that I can plant. So far, I have planted three hostas, but I was wondering if there would be something more colorful. If interested in viewing this garden project, just go to my journal. I am open to any suggestions at this point.
