Question about wildflowers

There are tons of beautiful wildflowers growing in the fields near my house. If I was granted permission (or if I was sneaky), I would love to try to take a few of them to grow at home. But is it hard to do that? I've heard that most wildflowers don't transplant well, but I was thinking more along the lines of taking a bit of the plant and growing it from that. Is that possible, or should I just find a place that sells native flowers and plants and buy them to save myself a lot of trouble?
