Questions and want advice…

Haven't seen anything on here along the lines I'm looking for, so figured I'd inquire myself. :) We're a family with 2 working adults, and a kiddo. Kiddo will be in public school next year, but for this year goes to a pre-k program that we pay for out of pocket. We can't afford to put him in daycare to allow both of us to work at the same time, so I work at night and hubby works during the day. Anyone out there have any strategies/tips for managing household stuff and life in general while working the overnight shift? I'm really trying to make this job situation as low stress on us as possible, since it's looking like even once kiddo is in public school it'll be easier for me to work FT at night and sleep in daytime than to find a FT job within school hours. On the same kind of thought, does anyone know of any jobs that tend to be M-F during school hours that don't require a college degree? If I could return to working days next year I would love to. So anyone out there have any tips/whatnot for working overnight shift? I'm looking for just about anything, from advice on adjusting personal mealtimes in relation to the rest of the world around you and their "normal mealtimes", to advice on being able to get restful sleep during the day, and even advice on how to deal with family members/friends and getting them to respect your sleep time during the day and getting those around you to realize you're working at night, not managing to magically make a paycheck appear while sleeping at the same time. Thanks in advance everyone! ETA: Thanks so far for the advice. I'm going to try and work on something in the way of blackout curtains. As for the whole ignoring everyone when I need to sleep, fortunately we've got things set up so that M-F kiddo is at pre-k and I sleep 6AM-2PM and then pick him up. hubby drops him off in the mornings. I'm off friday nights so I spend Sat morning with kiddo and Sunday morning hubby spends with him while I sleep. Anyone have a bit more info of managing a sleep schedule that has to go back and forth? The only things I can do around here at night are read or go online, and spending 8 hours at a shot doing nothing but thsoe things drives me crazy. We're renting from my parents right now, and I've been having a hard time getting my mother to understand the whole sleeping during the day becuase i work at night thing. She thinks I'm just lazy somehow. Also due to the renting from parents stuff, I can't really do much of anything around the house at nighton my nights off, becuase if I so much as leave my bedroom to do more than go to the bathroom I'm waking someone up. So currently I'm trying to find a way that makes it so I can sleep at night on my nights off without also sleeping during the day before and after the night off so I ahve some extra awake time during the day. I.E. I work sunday, and therefore need to sleep Monday morning because I'm tired. But I'm off Monday night and will therefore be sleeping Monday night, so I don't want to sleep 8 hours, be up for 8, then sleep again so soon and end up sleeping from like 10Pm Monday until 2Pm Tuesday, then feeling like all I've done with my time off is sleep. ETA2: Forgot to mention this. Thanks to all those who have job suggestions for overnight. I'm already working overnight cashier position at WalMart, and will be up to $10/hour with next raise in April. So I'm going to keep my eyes open, but I'm not looking to change things yet on that one.
