Quick Credit Card Question

Ha, that was all alliterative!
I know credit cards can be good for you, and that using them like cash is the best way to go, I just had one quick question.
I dont remember where I heard it, but I heard that if you just use a card and tehn pay off all the charges when its due, then it doesnt affect your credit in a negative or a positive way. Like you need to have a balance that goes from one month to the next, I guess maybe pay it off in two months?
I guess, it was: paying a certain amount(but not the entire amout) is the only way to get a credit score?
