Rabbits and blackbirds (baked in a pie)

Rabbits and blackbirds (baked in a pie)

I'm about ready to put in my first garden in several years (no more apartment living!), but I've got two problems: rabbits and blackbirds. I don't want to do anything that would hurt the rabbits. I love rabbits, and am having a difficult time accepting they can be destructive. (I had pet rabbits as a kid, plus a few wild rabbits I adopted) I've seen several bunnies in the backyard at one time. There's a large patch of wild violets back there, and I'm guessing they are tasty. I would prefer not to fence, because it's going to be a good-sized garden, and from what I've read, you have to bury a fence several inches or they'll burrow underneath. Also, I plan to have a few flower gardens around the yard, and that would not be pretty. So, I've read about sprinkly stuff made from fox urine, blood stuff, and even human hair clippings. Has anyone used any of that stuff with success? What about a fake snake? On the blackbirds, there's a tree full of them. I'm thinking of getting one of those fake owls...has anyone tried that? My grandmother always hung foil pie pans in the cherry tree, but that was so noisy in the wind. Plus ugly. What if I planted a big patch of clover? Would that just send a message to all rabbits to head to my house, or would it give them something better to munch on, instead of my stuff? Thanks in advance....I've never seen so many rabbits in my life. They're so cute.
