Raised garden

Raised garden

Hi all! Does anyone have any advice or just things to keep in mind for the construction of a raised garden? Our current plan is to use the 4" retaining-wall blocks from Lowe's. From what I've read, it should go something like: Dig a 2-3" flat groove in the soil where we want the walls to be, and fill the bottom with a layer of limestone or something of the kind (anyone know why?) Line the structure with gardening fabric to keep too much soil from leaching out. Line the fabric with gravel - for drainage, I presume? How to do this, I don't know, but I expect it will be akin to digging a hole in the sand. Fill in with good-quality soil and peat. Plant things! Does that sound about right? I've never attempted this before, but the soil in our new backyard is awful and I'd like to still have a garden. Optimally, next year or the year after I'll add another 8x4 bed next to the first one, but that's down the road! I'm starting my seeds indoors tonight - hopefully they will be an incentive to build the garden this weekend or next :D
