Rats. Not the cute kind.

Rats. Not the cute kind.

Our first-floor apartment has rats. (Not mice; rats. We've seen them. They're rats.) We don't leave food out, and they don't get into the food stored in the cabinets, but they still come out every night and poo all over the counters (and the floor, and the stove, and on top of the refrigerator...) I assume they're eating the cockroaches (which is good, I guess). The landlords know, and they've sprayed poison everywhere (which is good. I guess.) I assume they're coming through the hole in the wall, where the gas for the stove is piped in. The hole is behind the cabinets and not accesible to closing off. Cats are not an option. What can we do? Edit to add: I'm not willing to kill them, and no-kill traps are notoriously unreliable.
