Red Lily Beetle alert.
I live in SE England and I just went out and found 7 Red Lily Beetles chomping on my Regal Lilies which are just coming up. I want to warn anyone growing lilies to be on the lookout for these little devils as they will eat all the lily leaves in no time and you will be left without any lilies this year. Here is the offending little pest - pretty, I know, but deadly to lilies. You have been warned! Edited to add: These beetles also lay their eggs on the undersides of the leaves and they are red when first laid but after a while they are coated in something that makes them look like bird droppings. These must be removed and destroyed as well.
