Since everyone has been posting rent questions lately, I figured I'd post one of my own. My husband and I have lived in the same apartment since we got married two years ago. We are now about to buy a house and move. We are no longer in a lease and simply pay from month to month. We are planning to give our 30 day notice this Thursday. Here's the thing...we would really like to get our deposit back (which is around $350ish). We are planning to clean everything super well, and we've kept the place in good condition. The only thing that may knock us out are three little holes in our carpet from our cat and rabbit. Yes, I know, that's our fault and responsibility...but honestly, you can't watch pets 24/7. One hole is about dime-sized or smaller and is in our spare bedroom. The other two are a bit larger and are right in the corner of each bedroom's door frame. I wouldn't be upset if they kept part of our deposit for this, but I just don't want the whole thing being taken. We could really use that money. So has anyone had any experience with this? Are there any ways to fix this without totally re-doing the carpet? I read online you can just get scrap carpet and cut it down to fit and glue it but I can't see how that would really look seamless enough to be a good fix. Oh, and in addition to this, we have had countless issues here that were never really remedied, even though the apartment manager was notified. Some of the major examples: constant mold in our windows (it's a basement apartment) that we have to clean ourselves regularly, flooding in our spare bedroom closet causing damage to some of our personal items, and the most recent...a backed up septic system causing literally two inches of sewer water to come up into our bathtub. Does any of this justify a rebuttal if they try to take our entire deposit? And if so, how do we go about mentioning it? We have pictures from the flooding, and we can take pictures of the mold if we let it get that bad long enough to capture it on film, but I was stupid and didn't take pictures of the tub...I was disgusted and late for work and I just got out of there as soon as I could. So...any ideas? Or should we just accept the fact that we probably won't get our deposit back?
