This is only somewhat related to poorness, but you guys give great advice and I could really use it. In an apartment situation, how do most of you split the rent? Myself and my fiancee are moving into a 3 bedroom with two friends. We will be getting the master bedroom, and they will each have their own room. In our last housing situation, we split the rent up by ROOMS (not people). We paid about $200/mo more than the other 2 people for the master bedroom. In this situation, I was kinda floored when one of my friends expected that we would split the rent evenly (as in, each of us pays an equal share for rent even though 2 of us are sharing a room). I told her that I felt it was unfair and we agreed that the two people who have their own rooms would pay $430/mo each, while myself & my fiancee would pay $325 each (making the total for our room $650/mo). The total rent is $1510/mo, obviously. We're all broke and I now feel like a jackass. I don't want to put my friends through any kind of financial hardship... but before I talked about it with them, I felt a little taken advantage of. I need outsider advice. What do you guys think would be fair for everyone rent-wise? Obviously we will split utilities evenly among the people, but am I way off base about what's fair for the rent? EDIT: Thanks so much for all of your opinions. I was honestly surprised at how many people disagreed with me, but that's what I needed to hear. It seems like people are pretty much split between which of the two arrangements is most fair, so I think that's an indication that it would be smart to stick by the compromise we have made. I am thinking about offering to pay a little more per month (maybe $340 each/$680 total for me & fiancee, $430 each for them) because we do take up more communal room, which is a pain, but it is still a tiny bit cheaper than having our own place, which will have to come in the future. I love my fiancee, but anyone who's lived with a partner knows that sharing a small space with ANYONE is a lot of work. Thanks everyone!
