Rental Agreement (Month to Month)

Rental Agreement (Month to Month)

Hi...I searched the memories and didn't see anything there answering this question. I would really appeciate any help or advice. First of all I live in Los Angeles. I've lived in the same apartment for 8 years. The first year was a year long lease. After that, it automatically went to month to month. Last week, my landlord told me he wanted to convert my apt and offered me a bigger apt. in exchange. He said he would keep the rent the same for the first 6 months and then would raise it by $50.00 after the 6th month. He dropped off the new month to month lease yesterday. After reading it, I feel a little nervous/insecure. I've never seen or signed a month to month before. All my apts have been 1 year or 6 month leases. My question is this: Under "term" it says Aug 1st - Aug 31st. Is this a correct way to specifiy a month to month lease or does it need something more in writing? As it looks to me (average joe-ett renter) it looks like he's only renting to me for one month. Also, he offered to pay me some money to help with moving expenses to the new apt. Of course I could REALLY use this money to get me caught up and ready to move. Do you guys think that expecting this money BEFORE the move in date is unreasonable of me? I'd like to ask him for it next week, but i'm afraid of rocking the boat as I don't have a lot of options if I should lose this apt. and he's got sort of a weird temper. Any insight or advice would be appreciated. I need to call him tommorrow about the lease. Thanks in advance! :cross posted in Law Questions:
