Repairing Jeans?

Repairing Jeans?

So, I have two pairs of Levi's 515s that I love. Both have worn through/torn out along the inner thigh. One pair wore veeery thin before starting to rip out. The holes are in the body of the thigh, not on the seam. They start at the seam and then move out along the thigh. The other ripped out before wearing thin, and the inseam is basically trashed. Other than that, though, the jeans are in excellent condition. I would hate to toss them, or have to cut them up for craft fabric, because I love them. The damage is too high up for me to make reasonable cutoffs. Is there a way to repair or patch these? Barring that, anyone got directions for how to turn them into a denim skirt? I have access to handsewing tools, but no sewing machine. I could probably get access to a machine, but hand techniques are preferred. (I realize if I go the "make 'em into a skirt" route, I'll need a machine with a denim needle.)
