Scholarships and Grants
Does anyone know some good resources for (graduate level) scholarship and grant information? I'm still bouncing off the walls-- my sister just received an acceptance letter on Friday from Columbia University in NY for a PhD program in Anthropology and Education. She has a BA in Anth and a Masters in Education, with a 4.0 GPA. It turns out that they'll accept her Masters work as the first two years of the PhD program, so she only has to go for two more years to graduate with an Ivy League PhD. Wow. However, she already has about 30k in education debt and the cost of living in NY looks very high and the tuition alone will run 12k per semester, so she is afraid of not being able to attend because of the money. She's already filled out the application for a teaching fellowship position. I definitely think she should go, since it's her life dream to be a university professor and she would be employable in a timely manner with the program. But I want to explore all the possibilities and options and try my best to find her enough money to get by with grants so she won't go further into debt. One other thing I've pondered is that my boyfriend runs an education nonprofit charity organization with tax exemption status, so she may be able to look at scholarships that would only consider people affiliated with a tax-exempt nonprofit? I just don't yet know who they would consider giving the scholarships to- board members, employees, or what role she'd have to take on in the nonprofit in order to be considered for that type of scholarship. I just thought of that as a possibility yesterday. I could also use suggestions on finding affordable housing near Columbia that would allow for a girl and a cat, if anyone knows about finding reasonably priced housing in NY... Thanks for your time!
