Secured credit cards — your personal experiences?

Any members currently use a secured credit card? If so, which company? Have they been helpful in muscling up flabby credit a little or have they turned out to be a nightmare of fees, scams and bad service? I've looked at tags and memories and I've found helpful entries from two or more years ago but nothing recent. I've backread and used FF's handy word search function but found nothing pertaining to me. From recent research, I figured a possible way to repair my credit is to get a credit card. I'm credit-allergic: to me it's like gambling someone else's money but unfortunately people in the world gotta have some kind of credit. I'd only use it to purchase something small I already have the money for and pay the balance off right away. I'm not sure of my current FICO score but apparently my credit's not really bad, it's in hibernation. I would qualify for a student card except I'm not a student (yet. I don't think the credit card companies mean "middle-aged students". I have applied for an unsecured card through Citibank but my current income might disqualify me-- but I'll wait and see. If I get turned down there, I'd like to apply for a secured credit card but want to know what luck any if you folks here have had. Thanks for reading!
