security deposit issue
my husband and i put in a $1000 deposit with our apartment when we first moved in. we have lived in the apartment two years and have not harmed the condition of the apartment in any way. no spills on the carpet, no dents in the walls, etc. we're moving out and we had the apartment inspected by the maintenance dept at our complex. we were told that the corporation routinely charges the tenants for repainting and cleaning, regardless of the condition the apartment is in. basically, don't expect your whole deposit back. we got our notice of charges and they are in the neighborhood of $300. and $200 of that is to paint, the rest is cleaning charges. i don't feel like this is right. i've always heard that apartments never charge for normal wear and tear. and that cleaning was a job that *i* would do upon move out. what steps do we take to dispute this?? and am i overreacting?
