Security deposit issues.
First post woot! :D So I have an issue. When my boyfriend and I moved into our first apartment in November, it was painted by the previous tenants, it was dirty, and the carpet was all gross and stained. The lady said that we wouldn't be charged for these things, but when we moved out we never got our security deposit. We moved out on May 31, so we called them and they sent us a paper saying we owed them $15 for cleaning and repainting, meaning they used our security deposit for that. We finally contacted them about it and they said they would drop the $15 charge. No mention of giving us our deposit back or anything. So we're going to call tomorrow and demand it, but I don't know how to prove we moved into it "as is." The woman who said we wouldn't be charged no longer works there, and we don't have a copy of the lease or anything... so I don't know. Any advice? Also, the air conditioning was completely broken for all of May, and in South Carolina, that's kind of a big deal. We told them about it three times, and they never came to fix it. The heat also broke two or three times in the winter and it took at least a week each time for them to come do anything about it. I emailed them and said this was unacceptable and they owed us May's rent back for the month we spent in unlivable conditions, but they said that wasn't allowed. Does anyone have any advice on this matter? Any experience with getting money out of mean landlord people? Thanks! All help is appreciated!
