September is National Food Safety Month (US)

I thought since we've been talking about food safety in another post (re: donating grocery items), this would be an appropriate time to post this. I know it's not exactly "poor_skills" but if it can save any of us from throwing away safely edible food or going to the doctor due to food poisoning, I figure the mods won't mind too much. SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL FOOD SAFETY MONTH This year's focus is on proper food storage practices. Those of us on tight budgets, and isn't that why we're here, need to know whether it's safe to buy multiple packages of things and store them for lean times. http://www.nsf.org/consumer/food_safety/fsmonth.asp?program=FoodSaf There is also a wealth of information on areas other consumer areas including drinking water, food supplements, etc. If you have Adobe Reader & a printer, there are "Kits" you can print off and share with your family, kids, school, workplace, etc. Here are a couple of sample questions from a "Food Safety Test" for kids: Take the following test to see if your kitchen passes the food safety test! This is a fun and easy activity that kids can do together with their parents to measure their food safety knowledge. [seems to me it's good for us grown-ups, too] The temperature in the refrigerator in our home is: 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius) 41 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) Don't know The last time you had a leftovers from a dish that included meat, what did you do with the leftovers? Let them cool to room temperature, then put them in the refrigerator Placed them in the refrigerator immediately after the food was served Left them sitting out at room temperature for several hours/overnight
