Hi all-
Just wanted to post to show how it’s going, ask for some IDing help, and then ask a few more questions from the awesome experts in here. I’m a newbie, but I like to think I’m destined to become a “real” gardener: my name’s Ganit, which is “little garden” in Hebrew (cool, huh?):)
Anyway, in December, when I got the house, the whole backyard was just dirt covered in hay. After I got most of the hay raked up, it looked like this:
And here are the after shots.
Here’s my back white dutch clover lawn, with a tiny smattering of grass. In my head, the grass is the “weed”, not the clover :P
That’s the main perennial bed down there. It’s the perennial starter garden from Bluestone Perennials, a few extra geranium on the side, plus a volunteer sunflower plant. I just bought the easy stuff since I was scared to death of killing everything.
My favorites so far are the Salvia East Friesland and the Nepeta Walker’s Low, but a whole bunch of them haven’t flowered yet.
Morning glories popped up EVERYWHERE here. Superinvasive. I pulled it out like mad in May and June, and it’s coming up slower now :) But I left them go in two places, since they look pretty there:
Here’s a sunflower with a bee on it, and some bee balm
I loved my columbine and lupine while they lasted. I’m thinking of buying more and putting them by the bee balm.
And here are the two I wanted ID help with. I started some perennial seed mix from seed and ended up pulling most of it (it looked really tacky as it was, and I planted it too densely), but I liked these two kinds. What are they?
And a question: What’s a good way to get rid of a whole lot of weeds without Roundup? My front yard has a bed from the previous owner, and it is CHOCK FULL of weeds. I’ve pulled weeds out there for HOURS over the last 3 days, and there’s still more.
But there’s what looks like a rose bush in there, and I dumbly threw three Hydrangeas in amongst the weeds. How do I kill it all without hurting them?
Thanks in advance! Any suggestions are appreciated!
