Shipping Items Via USPS
To any of your broke college students out there thinking of sending your belongings to your new place via Media Mail with the USPS...think twice. Media Mail is DIRT cheap, but is only for books, CDs, records, tapes, etc. Nothing else, even though plenty of college students use it to send other things..... Media Mail is subject to inspection. Which means the Post Office has every right to open your box up and see what's in it. If you do not have media mail items, your stuff will get sent BACK to where it originated from, or it will get sent to the destination address, and you will need to pay the difference in media mail shipping vs. parcel post..So essentially, your package turns into a COD. I learned this today as I was trying to ship some things media mail. My box needed some extra tape on it, and instead of simply putting new tape on it, the clerk took the old tape off and opened the box up to see what was inside. I was scolded on the spot, told I was committing fraud and I would either have to pay to send my package parcel post or send it some other way. I simply took my stuff back home for now. So...I hope to save anyone the trouble of looking like an ass at the post office, like I did today. You can do it at your own risk, but remember they can open your shit up.
