silly question

I have a mystery! A couple of months ago I bought a fern (not entirely sure what variety) that I intended to plant under our maple tree in the back...it was thriving and thriving, well-watered, in a shady spot, then one day it just gave up and turn brown and died back! Here's the mystery: Last week I noticed two foot-tall plants growing along our side yard, right in the middle of the grass, and they're identical to the fern! I noticed the same thing in my neighbors' yard, right adjacent to our fence. Is this how ferns propogate? I know it has something to do with spores. If so, I imagine I can just retrieve my 'lawn ferns' and plant them where I originally wanted them, correct?
