Sowing Sunflower Seeds
Hello all! First I'd like to introduce myself... I'm Sherry, and I'm a 21-year-old who just graduated from the University of California, Riverside and now I'm looking for a master's program in marital and family therapy. Anyway, recently, I've gained an interest in planting sunflower seeds, 'cuz our family has never had sunflowers in our garden before. I'm really new to gardening, planting seeds and growing plants, so I joined this community to learn more about gardening and to ask for advice on how to plant my sunflowers (and hopefully other plants later on)! I just bought a couple packs of sunflower seeds - the Mammoth and American Giant Hybrid types. I wanted to start out growing a few of these seeds outside of my garden first just to feel safe (because I won't be able to tell the difference between a weed and a sunflower seedling that just popped out of the soil). I bought one of those little plastic trays with these little soil pellets that expand when you add water to them. Would it be okay to plant these sunflower seeds in the little tray first? I hope it won't be bad for the plants to start out in. How should sunflower seeds best be planted in a tray, pot or garden? And most importantly, how should I care for them? I don't know how much water I should give them a week, and how deep I should plant these seeds... And what kind of soil do they best grow in...? All I know is that sunflowers need full sun and the kinds that I'm planting - Mammoth and American Giant Hybrid - can grow really tall. =) Maybe here's a useful little piece of info - I'm living in Southern California. (Might give you an idea of our weather here.) Hm, I know this could be a lot to read and I'm asking so many questions. Any simple little tips for a beginner gardener is appreciated. Maybe website links, if know of any, might be good too if you don't like typing all that advice to me. =D Thank you for having me here! I didn't mean for the post to be this long. =( Oops.
