Sphagnum Moss, Bog Plants, Etc.

A few weeks back I purchased a couple of gallon bags of live sphagnum moss (legally) harvested from a peat bog in Wisconsin. It's been sitting in these bags for a while and I've been rinsing and squeezing it out every few days, and I keep it under lights. But it's dying. So how do I keep it alive? Also, aside from packing orchids in it, what is it good for? I'd kind of like to set up a small bog garden or a terrarium and grow some more unusual swamp-type plants. Maybe even some that are native to the area!
