Pardon if squash beetles have been discussed (haven't been watching the community lately), but I need some advice. I'm planning what veggies to grow this summer, and I want to grow cukes and maybe pumpkins or melons. But I've been having major problems with squash beetles the past two summers, and I'm not sure what to do. The first summer, I didn't realize what they were or that they were killing my squash and cucumbers until it was too late. Last summer, I tried hand-killing them, soap and water, and natural pesticides, but it didn't help at all. Should I just give the cucurbits a rest for a year or two and hope the beetles either leave or die out by then? Would netting be an effective way to protect my plants? Or is my only option serious chemical pesticides? (I'd rather not do that, but if it's the only way to get rid of them....) I hope somebody can help me out here. I love growing cucumbers, but I hate those bugs. Thanks!
