Squash Bugs

Squash Bugs

Are demons!!!! My garden is simply infested with squash bugs (the grey stinkers!). They've already taken out several of my strongest melon vines, killed my giant pumpkin plant, and are no doubt making their rounds to everything else. Can someone suggest an organic remedy? I fear my fall planting will be decimated before it even begins. Thanks in advance.

I take my watering hose to the base of the plant and lightly water all around it.  The squash bugs don’t like the water and climb up the plant.  Then I take my handy propane torch and sizzle them.  It doesn’t take much.  I also look under all the leaves for their groupings of eggs and I sizzle those also.  It doesn’t hurt the plant, uses no chemicals, and works!  I do this morning and evening for several days and it seems to get rid of all the little “demons”!  I keep my water running, so if there is any problem with scorching the mulch, I could take care of it – but so far have never needed it.  It’s quite gratifying.  :)

When planting, I mulch with cedar shavings. When plant is established and squash bugs appear, the best insecticide is dawn in a spray bottle with water.(2 Table Spoons to 8 oz of water) It kills the bugs in about four minutes after they are sprayed. I also put out squash bug traps made from a 2 liter soda bottle and night light. I sometimes put a plastic drop cloth for the plants to grow on, but this is only for grass control for me.
