I live on the third floor of an apartment building and my balcony gets TONS of light (there is nothing above me to block any of the sun). Two years ago I planted a bunch of vegetables in containers and had good luck with things growing, but midway through the season I ended up with a crafty squirrel who completely destroyed my peppers, broccoli, and a melon volunteer that actually had a fruit on it. I had cockily assumed I was immune to squirrels since I'm so high up, but apparently I am not. Last year I didn't really plant much (for various reasons, not just the squirrel), but I'd really like to have peppers, tomatoes, etc this summer. I'm just not sure what to do about the squirrel. He's so bold that he'll stay on the balcony when I step out the door and won't run off unless I swat at him with a broom. Two years ago, I tried putting hot pepper on my plants and around the edge of the balcony, but it didn't seem to bother him. I'm pretty sure I'd get complaints about chicken wire unless I did something to make it visually attractive. I was talking with a relative who suggested rigging up some bare wire and a 12-volt battery to secure a perimeter around the balcony. Has anyone done anything like this? I figure if I get it set up early enough, maybe I can train the squirrel to stay away and I wouldn't have to have the wire powered up most of the time after that. Does anyone have any other suggestions? This is one wily squirrel, and I am not interested in sharing my veg with him.
