I have used "Tax Act" (the online tax website) for a number of years. I've always been happy with my tax returns. This year, I plugged in all of my info., and I was quite happy with the federal tax return. Then, when I went to do my state return, they want me to pay nearly 300 dollars to the state of Ohio (this is where I reside and have resided all of my life). I have never paid into state taxes. I had the same job last year (but also worked as a teacher and then had unemployment when my teaching contract wasn't renewed). Could it be that my employer doesn't hold back enough state taxes? Could it be that Tax Act is wrong? Should I just file my federal return with Tax Act and then take my state return elsewhere? Does anyone know what just a state return might cost at a tax business? Any suggestions? This is just really annoying. I can't even think of why they want me to pay that much. Thanks so much for any help or advice you have! ETA: Sorry, I wasn't clear...2007 was when I worked as a teacher, got unemployment, and then got hired at my current job. So the unemployment tax issue was dealt with last year (I even received something like 40 dollars from Ohio). For 2008, I've only worked at this current job (I have a government job, and you would think the taxes would be figured out correctly for the state taxes(???)).
