strange worms

strange worms

This thread-like worm is about 6 inches long. There were a ton of them out in my garden yesterday after it rained. They were crawling up into high places and waving about in the wind. Does anyone know what they are? Are they safe for my garden? I tried googling, but kept getting info on parasitic threadworms, and I'm pretty sure this is not the same. Edit: I'm in Massachusetts, zone 6a, if that helps.

I’m in CT, we had heavy rain all day yesterday and last night, in my small box garden, I noticed movement, it was a worm exactly as you described, it’s called a Nematomorph or Hair worm, theres many different names for these worms. They prefer to be in the water but a host must of dropped them in the soil, or the worm left it’s host searching for a new cricket host. Google Nematomorph and you’ll be pleased with what you find.
