Target and Apartments

Target and Apartments

Hi! I’m new here but I’ve been in my apartment since September 07. However I am still getting it the way I like and I’d like to share some things I did to make it awesome. I had a budget of about $2K due to a Christmas Bonus, and Target is right up the street, so I spent most of it there. I will provide pix later, my apartment is in “craft project mode”, aka, it’s a mess. :D

TV cart for $25. All of Target’s cheapy furniture comes in a lot of pieces and requires assembly. The TV I had also gotten from Target, a 20″, for $100 but that was a purchase prior in the year. The stand fits the TV, a PS2, N64, wii, and a VCR. It’s on the small side though.

I can’t seem to find it on their site, but I know they carry them in the stores, but I have two 6′ black 5 shelf book cases that are also assembly required (and helps if you have another person to help you) that hold a LOT of stuff. I think each one was $20 or $25.

The couch I have is a green loveseat that my sister let her cats use as a scratch post, so I got a love seat cover in black from Target.com because they didn’t have it in the store. I went and got a few cheap pillow inserts since the cats had demolished the pillows that went with the couch, and covered them with some white long pile faux fur. Here I splurged and got the same fur that one of the Gabor sisters puts on her WALLS. You can possibly find it cheaper, in fact mine was $14 a yard, but that page has all sorts of cool colors and such.

I had gotten four end tables from my mom when she went to an estate sale, but I put one on each end of the couch and put two in front of it to act like a coffee table. I draped a zebra pashmina scarf on the table. Mine actually came from Lane Bryant and they no longer carry it, but it is a real pashmina with fringe and it was $40 (but I got it on sale tee hee!).

Before I moved, I had a giant corner desk that came apart in 7 pieces just to get it out the door. After moving 6 times with it, it needed to go. I fell in love with the size and versatility of studio desks (for keyboards and computers) but didn’t have the money to pay for RTA ones, so I found this one at Staples. It holds both my desktop, laptop, tablet, and stationary. Staples will deliver BUT, it has a lot of assembly required and trust me…you do NOT want to assemble this thing alone. Unlike the book cases it is heavy and will need a lot of turning and flipping on its side and such to assemble. I dropped it on myself twice. Not fun. It has wheels though so great for those who like to move stuff around. Wait for a sale, I got mine for $50 cheaper. An occasional one will show up on craigslist.

Lamps from Target. If you’ve been in a store, you will see they have mix and match stands and shades. I got a few of their cheap floor lamps, each about $25. I had a multi-directional one from before.

Wall shelves are great if you are allowed to put holes in the wall. My landlord didn’t seem to mind considering when I first checked out the place, there were foot wide holes in the wall that have since been fixed. I’m sure screw holes wont be that big a deal (I know how to fix them myself). I got two really cheap plastic ones.

The rug. I have hardwood floors, and this helps break up the monotony. Besides, it’s comfy. Mine was about $60.

After that, it was mostly bringing colors to white walls. I have no intention of painting, so I went to deviantart.com and bought several prints, including a giant one that is the centerpiece of my living room. I was an admin there so I got a bit of a discount, but if they ever have a sale, snatch up a few matte prints. Here are a few more I have.

Zebras.

Girl.
Stella.

And I continuously cover my fridge with art too.

He is called “The Ex” and you can find him on the net at about $60, I believe. The knives are very good and despite being plastic, the base is sturdy and magnets keep the knives in place.

EDIT: I forgot to mention the frames for said prints. The 40X30 I had to get a glass cut specifically for it, which was expensive, but Michael’s has frames to custom fit a painting. Everything else was 16X20 or around there, so I put them in cheap poster frames that were $12 each (got them after Christmas so they were further on sale). Also at Michael’s and Target are album frames. I took a bunch of old vinyls I had and put them in frames, including Breakfast in America, and put them in my little dining area.
