Tell me everything you know about growing hollyhocks from seed!

I went out and bought my Nasturtium seeds today. I like picking out my seeds early, because it takes some of the gloom away from this time of year. After growing a ton of things from seed last year, I swore that this year, I was only going to do Nasturtium. I had already hoped to find a Hollyhock plant in the springtime, but then I found these seeds. They're old fashioned single bloom Hollyhocks that are basically black. I couldn't leave them there, so they came home with my cherry rose Nasturtium seeds. The thing is that I really have no experience with Hollyhocks, and I would like as much advice as possible. The seed package lists them as a perennial, but other sources say that they act as a perennial by just reseeding themselves. How long does the average plant live? I appreciate any advice. I'd love to have some beautiful super dark blooms, and I don't want to end up doing anything wrong. ^_^
