Testimonial and thanks
My boyfriend and I have had a bit of a snafu with our food stamps, and we're short on cash... and thanks to this community, I'm not worried. I have a decent enough supply of the regular essentials, that we can go at least a couple weeks without shopping, altho much longer than that and it'd get pretty interesting. We only need to get thru a week or two though, I think, so no big deal, but I'm glad that I've been reading and picking up tips here. One thing I was worried about was milk. Just spent the absolute last of our food stamps on a gallon of milk. Going two weeks on a gallon isn't unheard of for us, but it's usually closer to a week. My solution? Well I had a can of dry milk powder I'd been haphazardly using, so I reconstituted a quart of it (a little less powerful than it called for) and we'll use that for any cooking we will need to do. With our usual milk consumption just from drinking it, we'll have no problems making that gallon last a couple weeks, easy. Of course, now I'll just need to squash the stupidly crazy craving for cereal that I know I only crave because it requires a largish dose of milk that I know is on ration. I might have to get creative, because we don't have some of our usual foods on hand that we eat all the time, or we're missing pieces to meals.... like I can't usually eat corned beef without cabbage and we have five 3lb chunks of corned beef, but I'll think of something there. And I have a whole turkey I've been meaning to use, so I'll have to think of what I'm going to do with that--that'll feed us at least a week if I try hard enough. But I'm feeling very empowered right now, because even though I've gone thru these types of food-money crisis before, I have better resources about what to do with the food I DO have. We're going tomake it thru this without tapping into the meager emergency fund I've started! Thanks to all the lovely suggestions from people in this community, who have been thru this before. So I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who puts the effort to post questions and respond to them, because it's made me more prepared to deal with this situation without fear.
