The Apartment at 61!

Hello all! I joined this group a few weeks ago, but our apartment has been way too much of a mess to take pictures of. However, since we’re having guests over tomorrow, you guys get to check out our handiwork. I just ran around taking pictures of the apartment I just cleaned!

The theme of this post is "interior design on a budget" otherwise known as "reusing a whole bunch of stuff left by previous tenants"

The relevant information you should have is that I moved out of my parents place and moved in with my fiance about six months ago. I brought a few things with me, but I’ve basically been making due with the stuff that a single 25 year old guy has managed to collect. I love my future husband dearly, but he really doesn’t pay much attention to a room beyond whether it has a wifi connection and a power outlet. Needless to say, the last six months have been a flurry of decorating projects as I’ve come across pieces I could see a little life left in.

Our place is still a work in progress, but it’s coming along nicely!

First stop is our balcony. We’re on the third floor, so we actually have a decent little view when it’s warm.

Our living room, including my Andre in his natural state. :-)

The other half of the living room, including the table that was my latest overhaul item. Next on the list? Drapes!

A close up of the table. I just set it up, but I predict it will end up being picture central. I heart pictures!

One of our umpteen bookshelves. I believe the term "booktris" has been used to describe our organization system.

A closeup of my sand collection. Yeah, I collect sand. I got the idea from Saving Private Ryan. Any time someone I know goes someplace cool, I ask them to bring me back sand in a plastic bottle from the area. So far my favorite is from India, which is the short bottle with the pink label in the front row. The itty little bottle next to it is from Mexico.

This is Miyagi, demonstrating how comfy the back of that chair is.

The dining room / office. It’s my next project.

Better office area picture. We were thinking about painting, but got distracted by other things. However, that didn’t keep us from putting random paint spots on the wall. Needless to say, we won’t be painting the room bright yellow! In other news, that tall set of plastic drawers was a previous tenant find. It was stuck out on our back deck collecting dust.

Miyagi again. He very thoughtfully chased that ball out of my way. So helpful! You can kinda see some of his favorite stuff behind the table. That box is full of blankets. He loves to chill there.

Our kitchen. I hadn’t been born yet the last time this room was renovated. However, we’re making it work! Those drawers were a prior tenant find too. I just set them up this afternoon. Thank God for drawer space at last!

I still have some work to do, but it’s getting there. I can’t wait to find some more wall art at some point!

My next post will include some bedroom shots. It’s not public-ready yet. :-)
