the things that have not worked … or lessons hopefully learned
NOT: The squash and cucumbers went in too early and died in the cold even though there were no actual frosts. The turnips, beets, lettuce, spinach and kale were way over seeded. Eating thinnings is a very labor intensive notion and I fear the plants are suffering. Carrot, pole beans, scallions and edamame don't seem to be germinating. They may also have suffered from the cold. Many seedlings grown in the shed have died, wilting over at the base. Too cold? or that wilt disease seedlings get (this was previously used seed starter "dirt"). Sage flowers were harvested and there is no use for them that I like. Next year I'll just harvest a few leaves as I don't use much and let them bloom for the beneficial insects use. I wanted certain varieties but didn't mail order them ahead of time so had to make do with what is available locally. Hopefully next year will be more organized.
