but has anyone here seen the movie Adaptation? If you've seen it, you could probably guess why I'm asking... If not - it's about a screenwriter who is trying to adapt the book The Orchid Thief to film. After seeing the movie, I assumed that it was all fiction including the book and the author, but then I looked it up a bit and apparantly it's a real book. Anyway, previously I was relatively uninterested in orchids. I thought they were pretty and all, but I'd always thought them to be expensive and difficult to care for, although I'd seen some posts on here about some inexpensive orchid finds. Still, I didn't want to get involved in any one plant that in and of itself is a hobby or career for many people. After seeing the movie though, and seeing some of the really amazing rare and exotic orchids, my interest has grown. I'm curious, does anyone know if all the orchids shown in the movie actually exist? I found photos of the Ghost orchid, but there were some others that seemed even more amazing. The movie states something to the effect that "each orchid has a unique relationship with the insect that pollenates it" and talks about how each different type of orchid has evolved in a special way just to be pollenated by that insect and I found that intriguing and wondered if it were really true. The real point is, I'm not finding any good websites with a lot of information about orchids, beyond caring for them and buying them. Anyone know of any? I suppose I could just go buy The Orchid Thief and start buying books about orchids, but books are expensive :/ Also, is there an orchid lj community? I tried searching for one earlier, but didn't find any.
