Today on my allotment

Today on my allotment

Arrived at the greenhouse this afternoon to the somewhat dispiriting discovery that something (probably a small furry something with teeny paws and twitchy whiskers) had dug up and eaten all my recently planted sweetcorn seeds. I'm not angry at the little chap - he was only doing what meeces do, after all - can't blame him for seizing on an easy source of food. But I could wish he had rather less expensive tastes - those were F1 hybrid seeds and cost over £2 a packet!
Rob suggested that I germinate the next batch at home and take them to the greenhouse when they're established, which sounds like a good plan. Now to find some more seeds! Mr Mouse had nommed all but one of my broad bean seeds too. He must have arrived fairly recently though as my peas had all germinated quite happily and I've just planted the first batch of the Cascadia sugar snaps out - they seem much more vigourous than the Hurst Green Shaft pod peas.

I was rather happier to find further evidence that my allotment is providing a good habitat for frogs - I have a cardboard box containg bottles of the run-off from the wormeries and when I opened it to get a bottle out to water the peas in, there was this splendid chap :-

He seemed somewhat disgruntled, as well he might, having had his afternoon nap disturbed :-)

I also saw a little fuzzy orange bee bimbling about and managed to get a shot of her too :-

I think she might be a red mason bee. And if anybody's wondering what weird sort of vegetation she's perched on, it's actually a bit of old carpet being used for weed suppression :-)

All five of the comfrey plants are coming up nicely now - soon be time to trim away last year's dead stems to give them room. Three of the rosemary cuttings I took last month look dead but two of them are still green. The wretched moluscs have eaten my basil, dahlia and swan river daisy seedling, so I've planted more and set a beer trap.

It's taken me about an hour to persuade Lj to load these pictures and let me insert them in this post. I hope to goodness they show up OK in the post...
