Tomatoes planted

Tomatoes planted

I’m not sure how this will go; tomatoes don’t tend to flourish in foggy San Francisco, but I picked two plants, one of which is supposed to do well here (Early Girl) and one of which is supposed to do okay (Roma). The local nursery didn’t have a very wide selection of plants, and I wanted to have two varieties, so I did my best. I think it’s possible to mail-order seedlings, but I’m not really sure how that works. Seems like a recipe for dead seedlings to me.

I planted them in a self-watering container. Hopefully that will increase my chances of success. It seems kind of small, but it’s specifically advertised for tomatoes, so… we’ll see.

The rest of the garden…. well, I’ve just about given up on my broccoli entirely. I’ve already pulled up four of the six plants, and am seriously considering pulling up the remaining two as well. Not that they’re not thriving–they’re gianormous. But I planted them too close together. I think I also didn’t plant them deep enough. They’re all flopped over. Not good. I’d just leave them and hope, but when they aren’t flopped over onto my other plants, they’re at least shading my other plants.

The peas seem to be doing well, though I planted them too close together too. (Basically, I planted everything too close together.) The leeks are coming along just fine so far. We’re going to attempt to actually eat some of the spinach for dinner tonight–we’ll see how much I can actually harvest. Somehow it tends to look bigger on the plant than it does on the plate. I’ve been plagued by carrot-top-eating somethings, I think probably earwigs. Damn them. The carrots seem to be doing okay anyway, but I wish the critters’d leave’em alone.

What else? The parsley has been a huge success. Literally. If I’d realized how big the first plant was going to get I wouldn’t have planted the second one, but they don’t seem to be bothered by the overcrowding. The oregano is humming along nicely as well, though I kind of wish I’d planted it outside the main bed, since it’s perenial. The chives seem to be fine. The mint–who knows. It appears to be slowly dying, but I don’t know what to do to save it, so I just throw some water at it now and then.

Three of the rosebushes have buds, and one actually has a few blossoms opening up. The other three don’t have any buds, but are doing pretty well. One I didn’t expect to really even come back at all, so I am pleased with its foliage.

I wish this was really my yard instead of my landlord’s.
