Training fruit trees

Training fruit trees

Hi. Does anyone have any knowledge on training fruit trees along a fence? The situation is that my neighbour has put up a lovely sturdy sun-catching fence, and I have an apple tree and a pear tree on dwarfing rootstocks. I grew them in pots last year (no time to plant out), but this year I was considering training them across the fence. Everything I read is about cordons and espaliers, and I flinch at the idea of cutting the trees back so viciously at this point. Plus, it seems really difficult ;) Does anyone have any less formal alternatives? I don't really know much about fruit trees, and I live in the UK. Thanks in advance :)
