i have a ginormous maple tree in my backyard, its over 10 feet around. my dad came over with his chainsaw last week and helped me do some minor trimming. while up in the tree, we discovered a large branch directly in the middle of the tree had a bad cut that is now rotting. i say bad cut because the cut was practically level, allowing rain/moisture to pool on the cut.
how do i save my wonderful old tree from further rotting?
can this be simply cut out?
*edited to add that the hole is big enough to fit a grapefruit inside it*

the tree from a distance, you cant see the branch in this picture because its surrounded by branches.
