UCSC Arboretum

UCSC Arboretum

Speaking of public gardens, the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) has the largest collection of proteaceous plants in the United States. Its main focus is plants from Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, as well as California. They have quite a few interesting species of plants (one is Eupomatia, which is an ancient line of flowering plants). Of particular note is that the New Zealand garden has the beginnings of a Kauri forest. Kauri are members of the Araucaria family, which is an ancient line of conifers (they're related to the odd flat topped trees with long, ropy branches you see in documentaries on Dinosaurs). You can see some pictures of their plants at the Arboretum's home page: http://www2.ucsc.edu/arboretum/
