My biological father abandoned us when I was 8 years old. A few years ago I heard that he was attempting to contact my brother and I in order to put us in his will, I was cool with this and told my mother to give him my info but nothing came of it, most likely because my mother never did it. He is 20+ years older than my mother which would put him in his seventies if he is still alive. After reading the post about unclaimed monies I started wondering if he had passed and left my brother and I anything. I checked the unclaimed monies site for California (where he last lived) and there is a death benefits claim available for my birth name. It says the owners are someone with my name and another person I've never heard of. When googling this person's name it seems that they may have a farm subsidy in the state of CA, but nothing much else comes up. How do I find out if this money is from my biological fathers death? If I submit a claim, thinking it's my father, and it isn't, can I get in trouble? Will they be able to tell me if it's my father or not? It's a nice chunk of change and I'd hate to lose it if it's mine. This probably seems a bit cold, but he was a bastard and the least he owes me and my brother is some cash after the crap we went through.
