Update on indoor herbs – help with gnats, please?

Hey.

Our herbs are doing pretty good – except the cilantro, which basically only lasted a couple weeks after we got it.

Otherwise, the mint, thyme, basil, and rosemary are doing great so far. The sage we have is doing so-so, but it looks like half of the plant is dying and the other half is still green and seems to be doing okay. I am really not sure what’s happening with it. I think maybe I have been overwatering it, but that’s only a guess…. the basil needs watered quite a bit as well as the mint.

We’re having a slight problem now with gnats. We only see a couple a day, but I’m worried they are fungus gnats and will start laying eggs in the soil. How do I keep bugs away from the herbs? Should I check my plants to make sure there are no larvae in the soil? I read that you put a slice of potato on top of the soil and the larvae will come up to eat it… but it said to do that only if you have a strong stomach… lol. I’m really not sure if I would want to see that, honestly.

So what can I do to get rid of these nasty bugs?

Thanks for the help!
