Usin’ it up…

Usin’ it up…

I just got done cleaning out my refrigerator, and I've got a question. We shop very frugally in this house, with a few indulgences. It's one of the main ways we keep ourselves within our budget. I just threw away so much food, and I'm horrified. So I'm looking for a way to use things up. Here are the things we already do, religiously: -- Break meat into smaller packs (or have it packed small at the market) and freeze what we're not using that day. -- Wrap cheeses and things tightly so they don't mold -- Plan meals around what's in the fridge -- Buy dairy products with the furthest-out expiry dates You would think that would cut down on waste, but I just threw away... -- Two porabello mushroom caps that turned to compost in the crisper -- Half a bag of baby carrots -- 3 partial cartons of half and half -- Multiple containers of leftovers of various kinds. (OK, I threw the food out and washed the containers...) What are your favorite tricks for using things up? I know about soups and salads. How do you keep your fridge organized so that you don't have things getting lost in the back corners and turning into science experiments? I mean, seriously, it does no good to get your food cheap if you don't eat it, right?
