Using flowering radishes as pest control? also chicken question

I was wondering if anyone ever planted radish seeds around their broccoli/cabbage/cauliflour plants before and allowed them to flower for pest control. I read that once in a book, can't remember which one though, and was wondering if anyone here actually tried it with any luck. I do have my seedlings planted and did plant the seeds around them but its way too early to tell. Not to mention I don't have issues with flea beetles yet. The flea beetles are what I have the biggest issues with. I don't really want to put out the money for floating row covers but if they are the most effective method then I'll consider doing it. I'm in Maryland zone 6. I try to stick with relatively natural methods since I do have the chickens and kids that free range in the garden LOL. I also have chickens that I let free range. Right now while my garden is small and the seeds are coming up I have it fenced in. Its an easy to move fence using plastic fencing and t-stakes. I don't have enough fence for my entire garden and I was wondering from anyone that may have chickens also (so I may potentially save some money) once the onions, peas, broccoli and potatoes are up a ways can I take the fence down so I can move it for the summer plants, or will the chickens peck it all to heck? Now last year my garden was well established by the time we got the chickens and the only thing we had to fence in was the ripe tomatoes. Thanks...
