Utilities, Incentives, and Leasing

Utilities, Incentives, and Leasing

I'm currently apartment hunting and I've noticed a lot of apartments include water, heat/gas, or both in the rent. Very rarely will you see electricity included. Is there anyone here who lives or has lived in an apartment with electricity included, and is there a catch included? I've also seen free satellite tv, free digital cable tv, and free wi-fi internet. I have seen or heard of single apartments located above small businesses that share all utilities with the business below them (rent includes all paid utilities). Does anyone know if there is a name for these types of apartments? Are there any incentives to moving in that has made you choose the apartment you are living in? I think the coolest incentive I saw was "FREE MONTH RENT OR FREE NINTENDO WII!" Personally, I would've gone with the Wii since they were (and still are?) hard to find. And finally when it comes to leasing, has anyone here ever been turned down? A girl friend and myself applied for an apartment ($600 a month) several years ago. I was turned down because they expected my income to be at least $450 a week! The girl friend wasn't employed, however, she just inherited a little over a million dollars and that pretty much sealed the deal. Has anyone here been turned down due to a roommate or significant other not having enough income? And if you knew you would be turned down, would you sign the lease as a single tenant and then let the other person just move in? I'm kind of in that situation again and I fear my lesser income may affect my girlfriend and I getting a place together. Ideas? Thank you! :]
