I'm excited, my local botanical garden's back into its teaching season. I'm dropping money and time on these classes, two of which (grafting, bonsai) I've taken before. It's a lot of fun to get together with other gardeners, though. Is anyone else in Vancouver? If not, do you have gardens that offer classes? You should try them! Cut for my list of classes. Ecological Gardening Take a natural approach to gardening! Learn how you can have a healthy, pesticide-free garden. Topics include organic fertilizers, soil amendments, composting, cultural practices, watering techniques and selection of native and other water-conserving plants. Sat., March 4, 10 am to 12.30 pm Member: $30 Non-member: $40 Eva Antonijevic ?The Art of Bonsai Bonsai captures nature's essence by artfully displaying living trees in miniature. Pauline Nielsen will demonstrate how to train and prune bonsai. She will also share tips on maintenance and overwintering techniques. You will start a bonsai in class. Learn tips for creating a low-maintenance garden from planning to site preparation and low-care plant choices. Amanda Jarrett will also cover pruning, fertilizing, weeding and irrigating techniques to help decrease maintenance. Mon., March 13, 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm Member: $32 Non-member: $42 Amanda Jarrett Grafting Workshop Learn the ancient craft of grafting – from theory to practical applications. Several common types of grafts will be discussed and demonstrated. You will "build" a fruit tree suitable for home gardens by grafting an apple scion onto a dwarf root stock. Bring a sharp knife. A good companion class to "All About Fruit Trees".
