Veganism and food banks

Veganism and food banks

My boyfriend and I have been in a really rough financial situation for a while and have been living on little-to-nothing. This week, it's gotten a lot closer to nothing. We're out of the bread we got from Food Not Bombs and the peanut butter we dumpstered to make PB&J sandwiches. Rent is due and we have to come up with a rental deposit so we can find a cheaper place to live. SO, I was considering going to a food bank. However, I don't really know how it would work, since we are both vegan. Should I let them know? I don't want to seem picky or ungrateful (even though, obviously, I'm neither by being an ethical vegan), but I also don't want to be sent away with a bunch of food I won't eat. I guess I could give whatever's not vegan to omni friends, but I feel bad taking food I don't need from a food bank. Has anyone ever dealt with this? How did the process go?
