Very silly question but I’m curious.

Very silly question but I’m curious.

It has rained every day for the past 9 days here in not-so-sunny Long Island. During a brief break in between downpours yesterday, I quickly planted the marigolds I purchased on Sunday. When I dug in the dirt, the stench was unbelievable. It smelled like pure, unadulterated poop. And not earthy-type manure poop, either. Stinky, sewer, toilet poop. I've never put manure or even compost on the spot and it never smelled like that before. What could have caused it? How can I prevent that awful smell from forming in my dirt? P.S., To sweeten up this stinky entry a bit, here's a pic of the iris I planted 3 falls ago, looking like it's finally going to flower: Two iris flowers?
