vinegar as a fabric softener

I know I’ve heard people say it works wonders, but how much do you use per load? I have a washing machine that does the fabric softener automatically when the time comes… would that work?

I checked the tags and although people talk about using vinegar, I could find no place where anyone said how much they use.
