Warrant in Debt?
I'm looking for some information for my sister. She received a 'Warrant in Debt' for a credit card she basically stopped making payments on because she didn't have the money. I'm not sure of the exact amount, but its for HSBC (it was for a Best Buy credit card) and it's for around $1,400. They left the warrant at our parent's house on their front door, since that is the last known address they have on file. She hasn't lived at home for a few years. Since then she has married and has a child. She is a stay-at-home Mom, so she doesn't have an income they can garnish. The only thing she does have is a joint checking account with her husband and a car that is in her name and her husband is the co-signer and they also rent a house. She's scared they are going to take the car or freeze the checking account or even garnish her husbands wages. I tried researching on the internet for some information to hopefully help ease her mind but wanted to see if anyone here has experienced this and could maybe offer some advice on what she can expect or do. What can/will they do? She's scared out of her mind to go to court, and it says she doesn't have to show up but she will be found guilty and she's unsure of what they then do after that. She is not trying to deny she owes this money, she just doesn't have the means to pay it at this time. We are located in Virginia.
